The hellbound heart6/7/2023 Listen via the links above, and for more of me in conversation with Phil and JF, here’s our epic two-part conversation on the problems with magick. In this episode, author, lecturer, and podcaster Conner Habib joins JF and Phil to discuss what is arguably Barker’s best-known work, the 1987 horror classic Hellraiser, as well as the novella that inspired it, “The Hellbound Heart.” In the decades that followed, he went on to create an astounding body of work in fantasy and horror as a writer, artist, and film director. You cut up a thing thats alive and beautiful to find out how its alive and why its beautiful, and before you know it, its neither of those things, and youre standing there with blood on your face and tears in your sight and only the terrible ache of guilt to show for it. In the 1980s, Clive Barker burst onto the cultural scene with The Books of Blood, collections of unforgettable tales of horror, depravity, and decadence the likes of which had been seldom seen since the days of Lautréamont’s Les Chants de Maldoror and Huysmans’ Là-Bas. We talk about Clive Barker’s film, Hellraiser, and the novella it’s based on, The Hellbound Heart. In lieu of posting an episode for the week, you can find me talking at length about two of my favorite horror masterpieces on one of my favorite podcasts, Weird Studies!
